Beyond the repressive hypothesis: the power over sexuality in Michel Foucault’s philosophy. Part 1: the birth of instinct

Goloborodko D., Institute of philosophy RAS

Abstract:  In the same line of Michel Foucault’s genealogical method, this article investigates the appearance and evolution of the question of sexuality inherent in contemporary society. The birth of the contemporary sexuality is examined through the lens of the historical and philosophical evolution of the approach to the notion of “madness”: from its understanding as an “illness” to its perception as a “danger” and therefore from the alienist conception to the security conception. The general hypothesis of this article is that the history of sexuality begins precisely where the history of madness ends. In the first part of the article, based on the lectures given by Foucault at the Collège the France known by the title Abnormal, we analyzed the conceptual shift of the “human monster” (the extreme image of exclusion) and of the idea of monstrosity of deviance, towards the notion of “abnormal” (which takes the place of the “monster” in the transformation of power). This shift is examined through the example of the evolution of forensic evaluation and criminal psychiatry. From this perspective, the case of Henriette Cornier (the “crime without reason”) and the pertaining birth of the concept of instinct are further examined.
